Qixi Festival (Chinese Valentine's Day)
China's traditional Valentine's Day โ the day when the Cowherd and Weaver Girl reunite
๐ History & Origins
The Qixi Festival, also known as the Festival of Skills, Seventh Sister's Birthday, Daughters' Day, the Begging-for-Skills Festival, and many other names, is a traditional Chinese folk festival celebrated on the seventh day of the seventh month of the lunar calendar. The Qixi Festival evolved from star worship and is traditionally the birthday celebration of the "Seventh Sister" (Weaver Girl). Because the worship ceremony was held on the evening of the seventh day of the seventh month, it came to be known as "Qixi" (Seventh Evening). Traditional customs include praying to the Seventh Sister, making wishes, begging for skillful hands, watching the Cowherd and Weaver Girl stars, praying for a good marriage, and collecting Qixi water. Over time, the Qixi Festival became intertwined with the beautiful love legend of the Cowherd (Niulang) and Weaver Girl (Zhinรผ), transforming it into a festival symbolizing love. It is now considered the most romantic of all traditional Chinese festivals, earning the title of "Chinese Valentine's Day" in modern culture. In 2006, the Qixi Festival was inscribed on the first list of China's National Intangible Cultural Heritage.
