Winter Solstice (Dongzhi Festival)
One of the 24 solar terms โ dumplings in the north, tangyuan in the south
๐ History & Origins
The Winter Solstice, also known as Rinan Zhi, Dongjie (Winter Festival), or Yasui, carries both natural and cultural significance โ it is both one of the most important of the 24 solar terms and a traditional Chinese ancestral worship festival. The Winter Solstice is one of the "Four Seasons and Eight Festivals" and was regarded as a major winter celebration. In ancient folk tradition, there was a saying that "the Winter Solstice is as significant as the New Year." The Winter Solstice is the day when the Northern Hemisphere experiences the shortest daylight and longest night, with daylight hours decreasing the farther north you go. After the Winter Solstice, the sun's direct point gradually shifts northward, and days in the Northern Hemisphere begin to grow longer while nights shorten. Winter Solstice customs vary by region, differing in content and detail. In southern China, there is a tradition of ancestral worship and banquets on the Winter Solstice. In northern China, it is customary to eat jiaozi (dumplings) on this day. The Winter Solstice carries both natural and cultural meaning โ it is at once a marker in the natural calendar and a traditional day for honoring one's ancestors.

The Winter Solstice is not a public holiday and has very little impact on tourism. However, it marks the beginning of the "Nine Nines" โ the coldest period of winter in China. Travel to warmer southern destinations to escape the cold and to northern destinations for snow and ice experiences both start to pick up. Some regions hold Winter Solstice ancestral worship events, which may slightly increase local traffic.
