Introduction
Gansu stretches across the heartland of northwestern China, shaped like a ruyi scepter nestled between the Loess Plateau and the Tibetan Plateau. This is the golden section of the ancient Silk Road — the Hexi Corridor — where Eastern and Western civilizations have converged and blended for over two thousand years, leaving behind countless awe-inspiring cultural treasures. The millennia-old murals of the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang are among the most brilliant jewels in humanity's artistic treasury: 735 caves, 45,000 square meters of murals, and 2,415 painted clay sculptures spanning ten dynasties, quietly blooming in this desert landscape. The timeless bond between Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Moon Spring is a testament to nature's artistry — a clear spring that has endured for a thousand years in the heart of the desert without drying up. Jiayuguan Pass marks the western terminus of the Great Wall, the 'Greatest Pass Under Heaven' standing majestically above the Gobi. The Rainbow Mountains of Zhangye resemble God's overturned palette, with layers of red, orange, yellow, and green rock interwoven across the hillsides, rated by Chinese National Geography as one of China's seven most beautiful Danxia formations. The Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture is another world entirely — the prayer wheel corridor of Labrang Monastery, the stone city of Zhagana, and the pastoral songs of Sangke Grassland make this the closest Tibetan highland region to inland China. From the lonely desert smoke of the Hexi Corridor to the green mountains and clear waters of Longnan, Gansu's diversity far exceeds imagination — a living Silk Road history book to be explored on foot.
Gansu is one of China's most culturally rich travel destinations, and the Hexi Corridor is truly the 'crossroads of Chinese civilization.' For a first visit, I recommend 7–8 days following the classic Silk Road route: Lanzhou → Zhangye → Jiayuguan → Dunhuang. If time allows, the Gannan loop and the Longdong grotto clusters are well worth exploring in depth. May to October is the best travel season, with June to August offering the most comfortable temperatures. Mogao Caves tickets must be booked at least one month in advance on the official website (peak season is limited to 6,000 visitors per day). Distances between attractions in Gansu are considerable, so self-driving or hiring a car with driver is the best way to get around. This route connects seamlessly with the Qinghai Grand Loop.

Local Cuisine

Lanzhou Beef Noodles
One of China's most famous noodle dishes, defined by the principle of 'one clear, two white, three red, four green, five yellow' — clear broth, white radish, red chili oil, green garlic sprouts and cilantro, and golden noodles. The noodles are hand-pulled to order and come in various thicknesses — hair-thin, thin, medium, thick, leek-leaf, and wide — served in a slow-simmered beef broth. A steaming bowl of beef noodles is every Lanzhou local's 'soul breakfast.'
📍 Noodle shops throughout Lanzhou (Ma Zilu, Mogouyan, Anboer) — the authentic version is only found in Lanzhou

Dunhuang Donkey Meat Yellow Noodles
A famous Dunhuang local specialty — golden hand-pulled noodles topped with a savory sauce made from donkey meat, tofu, and various vegetables. The noodles are chewy and smooth, and the donkey meat is tender and flavorful. As the Chinese saying goes, 'Dragon meat in heaven, donkey meat on earth' — donkey meat yellow noodles are synonymous with Dunhuang cuisine, and visiting Dunhuang without trying them is a trip wasted.

Hand-Grabbed Lamb
A traditional delicacy of Gansu's Hui and Tibetan peoples, made with locally free-range tan sheep or Tibetan sheep. The meat is boiled in plain water with minimal seasoning to preserve the lamb's natural flavor. The meat is tender with no gamey taste, eaten by hand and dipped in salt and pepper. Linxia's hand-grabbed lamb is the most renowned in Gansu.
📍 Halal restaurants throughout Linxia, Dazhong Lane food street in Lanzhou

Niangpizi (Cold Skin Noodles)
A traditional snack found throughout Gansu — cold noodle sheets made from flour, dressed with chili oil, sesame paste, garlic sauce, and vinegar. The texture is smooth and chewy with a tangy, spicy kick. Lanzhou's niangpizi and Tianshui's guagua each have their own character, making them the perfect summer refreshment.

Getting Around
How to Get There
💡 Lanzhou is Gansu's largest transportation hub with direct flights from all major Chinese cities. The Lanxin High-Speed Railway connects Lanzhou → Zhangye (3 hours) → Jiayuguan (4.5 hours). Dunhuang has its own airport with direct flights from Beijing, Xi'an, Chengdu, and other cities. The train from Lanzhou to Dunhuang takes about 7 hours (bullet train)
Local Transport
🚇 Metro: Lanzhou has Metro Line 1; other cities have no metro
🚌 Bus: City buses cover major attractions in each city. Intercity buses are available but with limited schedules
🚕 Taxi: Base fare is about ¥8-10 in each city. Using the Didi ride-hailing app is recommended
💡 Distances between Hexi Corridor attractions are considerable (Lanzhou to Dunhuang is about 1,100 km) — self-driving or hiring a car with driver is recommended. The Gannan loop also calls for a hired car or self-driving. High-speed rail is a fast and convenient option for connecting Hexi Corridor destinations

Practical Info
Payment
WeChat Pay and Alipay are widely accepted in Lanzhou, Dunhuang, Zhangye, and other cities. Cash is recommended for remote areas of Gannan and some scenic spots
Language
Mandarin is spoken everywhere. Tibetan is spoken in the Gannan Tibetan area, and Mandarin is common in the Linxia Hui area. Major scenic spots have bilingual Chinese-English signage, and the Mogao Caves offer multilingual guided tours
Safety
Public safety is good. Be aware that the Hexi Corridor region has strong UV rays and a dry climate — bring sun protection and moisturizer. The Gannan area sits at 3,000–4,000 meters elevation, so watch for altitude sickness. When self-driving, be cautious of fatigue from long-distance driving
Communication
4G/5G signal is good in cities and major scenic areas. Signal is weaker in remote parts of Gannan and the Gobi areas around Dunhuang. There is essentially no signal at Yardang Devil City and the Yumen Pass area. Downloading offline maps in advance is recommended
