Introduction
Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, located on China's southern frontier, is a magical land where extraordinary mountains and rivers, ethnic traditions, and tropical coastlines converge. The saying "Guilin's scenery is the finest under heaven" has echoed for a thousand years — the karst pinnacles lining both banks of the Li River form a living ink-wash landscape of swaying bamboo and fishermen singing at dusk, the ultimate expression of Chinese mountain-and-water beauty and an endless wellspring of inspiration for poets and painters. Drifting down the Li River on a bamboo raft, fantastic peaks reflected in the water on every side, you feel as though you are floating through a painting. Yangshuo takes the pastoral idyll even further — along the Yulong River, water buffalo amble through rice paddies, farmers return home with hoes on their shoulders, and layer upon layer of karst peaks recede into the twilight, composing one of the most beautiful rural vistas on earth. Guangxi is the homeland of the Zhuang people, and more than a dozen indigenous ethnic groups — Zhuang, Yao, Miao, Dong, and others — call it home. The Third Month Third singing festival, Zhuang brocade weaving, bronze drum culture, and Dong Grand Song each carry a millennium of wisdom. The Longji Rice Terraces spiral from valley floor to summit, an awe-inspiring agricultural marvel carved into the earth by generations of Zhuang and Yao ancestors. To the south, the powder-white sands of Beihai Silver Beach and the volcanic landscapes of Weizhou Island set against azure waters reveal a side of Guangxi entirely different from its mountain-and-water paintings. In the culinary realm, the silky, savory Guilin rice noodles awaken the morning palate, the sour-spicy punch of Liuzhou snail noodles is utterly addictive, and Yangshuo beer fish — crispy outside, tender inside — lingers long in memory. Whether you are a landscape hunter chasing world-class scenery or a city dweller yearning for pastoral life, Guangxi will present a poetic China in the most genuine and moving way.
Guangxi is one of China's most visually stunning travel destinations — its karst mountain-and-water scenery is truly world-class. First-time visitors should plan 5–7 days on the classic Guilin → Yangshuo → Longji Rice Terraces route. With more time, extend to Beihai and Weizhou Island for coastal scenery. The best travel seasons are April–October, with April–May and September–October offering the most pleasant weather — avoiding both the midsummer heat and the peak-season crowds. Li River cruise boats and Yulong River bamboo rafts should be booked in advance, especially during high season. Plan at least two nights in Yangshuo to fully enjoy the town's pastoral charm and nightlife.

Local Cuisine

Guilin Rice Noodles
Guilin's most iconic dish, with over 300 years of history. Rice is ground into a slurry and steamed into round noodle strands, then topped with braised beef or horse meat, crushed peanuts, scallions, pickled bamboo shoots, and other garnishes, all drizzled with a secret braising sauce. The authentic way to eat them is dry-tossed (without soup) — mix everything thoroughly, then slurp up the silky, springy noodles infused with rich, savory braising sauce.
📍 Chongshan Rice Noodles, Ritouhuo Rice Noodles, Tonglaiguan (time-honored brand) in Guilin city — rice noodle shops on virtually every street

Yangshuo Beer Fish
Yangshuo's most celebrated specialty dish, made with wild Li River carp or swordbone fish. The fish is pan-fried until golden on both sides, then braised with local Guilin beer, green and red peppers, and tomatoes. The result is crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, with the malty aroma of beer infused into the flesh and a rich, savory sauce — an absolute must-try when visiting Yangshuo.
📍 Dashi Fu Beer Fish, Xie Dajie Beer Fish, and Chen Mama Beer Fish on Yangshuo West Street

Liuzhou Snail Noodles
A Guangxi snack that has taken China and the world by storm in recent years, famous for its distinctive 'stinky' aroma. Round rice noodles sit in a river-snail broth, topped with pickled bamboo shoots, peanuts, bean curd sticks, wood ear mushrooms, and pickled long beans. The broth is simmered for hours from river snails and pork bones — sour, spicy, savory, and layered. It smells funky but tastes incredible, and one bowl is all it takes to get hooked.
📍 Liuzhou city center (the authentic birthplace); many branches also in Guilin

Lipu Taro Braised Pork
A classic Guangxi banquet dish featuring large taro from Lipu, Guilin, and pork belly as the main ingredients. The pork belly is deep-fried until crispy, then layered alternately with taro slices, seasoned with fermented bean curd sauce and minced garlic, and steamed for 2–3 hours before being inverted onto a serving plate. The taro is powdery and melt-in-your-mouth soft, while the pork belly is rich but not greasy — the two meld perfectly in a traditional dish that excels in color, aroma, and flavor.

Top choice for backpackers and vacationers alike. The West Street area is lively and convenient; boutique guesthouses along the Ten-Mile Gallery are quieter, with karst peaks right outside your window.
Xingping Ancient Town
A tranquil Li River town away from the crowds. Riverside guesthouses face the very mountains depicted on the 20-yuan note — wake to fishermen casting nets and experience the purest Guilin scenery.
Longji Rice Terraces
Stay in a traditional stilt-house guesthouse perched on the terraces — open your window to layered rice paddies, sea of clouds, and sunrise, and experience the authentic mountain life of the Zhuang and Yao peoples.
