Dragon Boat Festival
A traditional festival honoring Qu Yuan โ dragon boat races and zongzi
๐ History & Origins
The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanyang Festival, Longzhou Festival (Dragon Boat Day), Chongwu Festival, or Tianzhong Festival, is a major folk celebration that blends ancestor worship, blessings, warding off evil, festive entertainment, and special foods. The festival originated from the worship of celestial phenomena in ancient times and evolved from ancient dragon-totem sacrificial rites. At the height of midsummer on the fifth day of the fifth month, the Azure Dragon constellation ascends to the due-south midheaven โ the most balanced and auspicious position of the entire year โ as described in the Book of Changes: "The dragon flies in the heavens." The most widely known origin story of the Dragon Boat Festival is the commemoration of Qu Yuan, the great poet of the State of Chu during the Warring States period. Qu Yuan drowned himself in the Miluo River on the fifth day of the fifth month. To prevent fish and shrimp from consuming his body, local people raced out in boats and threw rice dumplings into the river, giving rise to the customs of dragon boat racing and eating zongzi (sticky rice wrapped in bamboo leaves). In 2006, the Dragon Boat Festival was inscribed on the first list of China's National Intangible Cultural Heritage. Since 2008, it has been a statutory public holiday. In 2009, UNESCO officially added the Dragon Boat Festival to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, making it the first Chinese festival to receive this designation.

The Dragon Boat Festival is a 3-day mini-break in early summer, when the climate is pleasant and ideal for travel. Cities along rivers hold grand dragon boat races that draw large crowds. Demand for transport and accommodation rises, but not to the levels seen during May Day or National Day. Southern water towns and ancient villages are especially popular.
These dates fall on weekends but are designated as workdays. Public transit runs on weekday schedules.
